Robotic layup cell for serial production

Project · Robotics

A robotic layup cell for serial marine and automotive production.

An automotive supplier needed repeatable, high-quality carbon-fiber layup for a production run of 800 units. Hand layup was too slow and inconsistent — we proposed and built a robotic cell with two arms handling ply placement, end-effector tooling for cut & place, and inline cure monitoring.

Cell specification

  • 2× robotic arms 6-axis, 12 kg payload
  • End-effector tooling Cut, pick, place, compact
  • Inline cure monitoring Temperature & exotherm data per part
  • Cycle time 18 minutes per layup sequence

Robotic Layup

Two robotic arms handling ply placement for serial production — reduced cycle times and improved consistency.

About this service

Cut cycle time. Raise consistency.

The robotic cell cut layup time per part by 60% compared to hand layup, and ply placement variation dropped below 1 mm across the entire program. The cell has since been reconfigured for two additional part numbers.

The robotic cell paid for itself inside the first program. We've since moved two additional parts onto the same line.
